Properly, Bernstein recorded this symphony three completely different times — with the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and likewise at a historic efficiency in 1989 in Berlin shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, with members of four completely different orchestras (the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Kirov Orchestra from then-Leningrad and the Orchestre de Paris).
The 15th-century Franco-Flemish composer Johannes Ockeghem’s French chansons were like the pop songs of his day. Although these works for a number of singers are thick with contrapuntal strains, and have a tinge of austere Renaissance sacred music, they are additionally attractive, sensual and nuanced, as Blue Heron’s splendid account of Permanent vierge†demonstrates.
